ICTY Final Judgments - Prosecutor v Jadranko Prlić and others

The International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia has delivered its final judgment prior to the Tribunal closing on 31st December.

On 29th November, the Appeals Chamber pronounced its judgement in Prosecutor v. Jadranko Prlić et al., in what was the Tribunal’s most voluminous appeal as well as its final case.  Read the Tribunal's announcement.

The Appeals Chamber affirmed
almost all of the Trial Chamber’s convictions of Jadranko Prlić, Bruno Stojić, Slobodan Praljak, Milivoj Petković, Valentin Ćorić, and Berislav Pušić with respect to events occurring between 1992 and 1994 in eight municipalities and five detention centres in the territory of Bosnia and Herzegovina. It also affirmed the sentences imposed by the Trial Chamber, which sentenced Prlić to 25 years’ imprisonment, Stojić, Praljak, and Petković to 20 years’ imprisonment each, Ćorić to 16 years’ imprisonment, and Pušić to 10 years’ imprisonment.

A number of former Yugoslavia cases are now before the Mechanism for International Criminal Tribunals (MICT) established by Resolution 1966 (2010).  These include the appeal by Radovan KARADŽIĆ

MICT was established to carry out a number of essential functions of the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda and the International Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia.

In accordance with its mandate, the Mechanism has assumed responsibility for, inter alia, the enforcement of sentences, administrative review, assignment of cases, review proceedings, appeal proceedings, contempt, requests for revocation of the referral of cases to national jurisdictions, the variation of witness protection measures, access to materials, disclosure, changes in classification of documents and requests for compensation and assignment of counsel. The Selected Ongoing Cases are only a few of the pending judicial proceedings, related to the above-mentioned essential functions, currently before the Mechanism.
